Sage:

  • Decongestant: Its aromatic compounds can help open up nasal passages by reducing mucus.
Rosemary:
  • Anti-inflammatory: Rosemary contains compounds like carnosic acid that can reduce inflammation in the nasal passages.
  • Expectorant: Helps in loosening and expelling mucus, which can clear congestion.
Peppermint:
  • Menthol: Peppermint is rich in menthol, which acts as a natural decongestant. It provides a cooling sensation, which can help to open nasal passages and soothe irritation.
  • Antispasmodic: Can relax the muscles of the respiratory tract, easing breathing.
Thyme:
  • Antiseptic: Thyme's thymol content has antiseptic properties, beneficial for fighting sinus infections.
  • Mucus Thinner: Helps in breaking down mucus, facilitating its expulsion.
Oregano:
  • Antibacterial: Like thyme, oregano contains carvacrol, which has potent antibacterial properties, potentially reducing infection in the sinuses.
  • Expectorant: Encourages the movement of mucus out of the respiratory tract.
Chamomile:
  • Anti-inflammatory: Chamomile can soothe inflamed mucous membranes, reducing swelling and discomfort.
  • Calming: Its calming effects might also help in reducing stress-related exacerbations of sinus issues.
Lemon Balm:
  • Antiviral: Lemon balm has antiviral properties which might be useful if the sinus congestion is due to a viral infection.
  • Relaxant: Helps relax the respiratory system, potentially aiding in better breathing.
Mechanism of Action:
  • Steam Inhalation: The steam itself helps by:
    • Moisturizing: Adding moisture to dry, irritated nasal passages, which can help thin out mucus.
    • Promoting Drainage: Warming the sinuses encourages blood flow, which can aid in mucus drainage.
  • Aromatherapy: The aromatic compounds from these herbs:
    • Stimulate Mucus: By moisturizing and stimulating the nasal passages in a beneficial way, the body will be encouraged to naturally expel mucus.
    • Antimicrobial Action: The essential oil naturally created from steaming herbs can kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria, viruses, or fungi causing or aggravating the congestion. PRO TIP: Keep the steam contained until you can breathe it in so these essential oils don't evaporate before you have the chance to benefit from them.
  • Combined Effect: When these herbs are used together in steam:
    • They can complement each other’s actions, providing a more comprehensive approach to reducing congestion, fighting infection, and soothing inflammation.
How to Use:
  • Steam Inhalation: Boil water, then remove from heat. Add a small amount of your sinus steam herbs to the water.
    • Lean over the bowl with a towel over your head to trap the steam, and inhale deeply for about 10-15 minutes. Be cautious not to burn yourself with the steam. Do NOT boil herbs, as this will cause all the oils to evaporate because of the high temperature.
